What is a naturopath?
A Naturopath is your own personal health detective, practicing holistic medicine to find and make sense of the underlying patterns in your health that are causing mental or physical illness. A Naturopath is trained to look at you as a whole person, considering your psychological and social wellbeing, your diet, sleep, exercise, nutritional deficiencies, stress levels, digestion, hormonal health, immune health and gut health and tie it all together to create a plan to bring your body and it’s systems into harmony.
The body works best when it has access to:
- Clean air
- Clean water
- Nutrient dense organic food
- Sunlight and nature
- Quality sleep
- Daily movement
- Social connection
- Living in alignment with your values
- Meaningful work
- Ways to process emotional stress and trauma
- A healthy environment – low in radiation eg wifi, high voltage powerlines, mould, dust and air pollution.
A Naturopath will use Dietary advice, Lifestyle advice, Health Coaching, Herbal Medicine & Nutritional Supplements to prescribe an individual health plan to help you achieve your health goals.
can you work alongside my doctor?
Absolutely! I am passionate about integrative, patient centered medical care and will gladly work alongside your doctor or allied health team to help you. It takes a village and I’m here to support you. I have been part of interdisciplinary medical teams for over 20 years and am versed in safely working with people with complex medical needs.
do you work with neurodiverse people?
Yes, I love to support Neurodivergent folks and I have experience with people who are on the Autism Spectrum, ADHD, Gifted, 2E or have sensory processing issues. I have family members who are neurospicy and will consider your executive function, your strengths and goals when creating a health plan for you to follow.
Are you inclusive of Lgbtqi+ folks?
Yes, I welcome folks from the Queer community and offer a safe, non judgemental space.
do i need to spend my life savings on
taking lots of herbs and supplements?
Some Naturopaths get a bad wrap for over prescribing expensive supplements. As your Naturopath, I ask that you let me know your monthly budget for any herbs or supplements and I will respect that and keep things affordable for you.
For most issues I will prescribe 1 to 3 things to take every day that will help you improve your symptoms.
For fertlity clients, you are likely to be on a lot of herbs and supplments, as this is a complex, multifaceted area and it can take “the big guns” to get results.
i’ve run out of herbs / supps between
consults…. can i get more?
Yes, I authorize repeats on any herbs or supplements so that you can access more if you run out between consults, or if you’ve had to reschedule a consult. You can access this via your patient portal and have them delivered to your door via express medical courier.
I am reacting to my herbs / Supps, what
should I do?
If you have a reaction to any herb or supplement, stop taking it and contact me via email. Please reach out to me so I can help you stay on your plan so that you aren’t “stuck in the woods” until your next consult not knowing what to take or not getting any results.
If it’s an anaphylactic reaction – call 000 for urgent medical care.
Most herbs and supplements if you react to them are stimulating the body a little too much and often just need a change in dosage, change in time of day taken, or to be started more slowly and gently one at a time with guidance from me.
i’m feeling awesome now, do i need to
keep taking my herbs & supplements?
Sometimes yes and sometimes no! We often move on to taking less things every day and to lower doses to maintain results. Sometimes for example for someone with PCOS who now has regular ovulatory menstrual cycles, the body has gotten in to a rhytym and may not need herbs any more.
In the case of iron or vitamin D deficiency, I see time and time again people testing low again in 6-12 months after stopping their supplements, so we move on to a maintenence dose to keep you at optimal levels long term.
HOw often do I need to see a naturopath?
When you see a Naturopath, at your first consultation, we will identify your health goals and discuss any barriers to achieveing these goals that might currently exist in your life. For example, you might be time poor, have an injury that is preventing exercise, you may be confused about what foods nourish your body or don’t know what to cook or be too tired to make any lifestyle changes.
We create a plan that meets you where you’re at that respects your busy lifestyle, adding in diet or lifestyle changes at a pace that suits you.
Usually we catch up once a month for a few months. Most people see a good level of improvement in their health issues in 1-3 sessions. For chronic health issues, long term mental health or fertilty issues, a 6-12 month plan may be needed, with catch ups every 2-3 months after the first few sessions.
We ensure that your plan is creating meaningful change in your life at every session and refine it accordingly once you feel better.
how do i prepare for my first
consultation?
- Get copies of any pathology or medical imaging reports from the past 1-2 years and upload it to your patient portal
- Reflect on what your health concerns are and fill out your intake form online before your consultation
- Write a list of questions you want to ask me so that you get the most from your session
- Reflect on any barriers you may have to getting better so we can address them
- Notify me of all prescription medication that you take so I can safely prescribe alongside it
- Notify me of the brand and name of any herbs or supplements you are currently taking, or any you’ve taken in the past that worked well or that didn’t work well
What issues can you treat?
I’m trained as a “general practice Naturopath” and there’s not many issues I haven’t treated in over 20 years of practice. If you have a rare health condition and looking for an expert in that field, feel free to email me to see if I can help you. I am happy to refer to another colleague if I feel that someone else can better support you.
I treat babies, kids, men, women and non binary folk, young and old.
For cancer patients, I can provide recovery or post cancer support, but prefer to refer out for most active cancer cases, as I have wonderful colleagues with more experience in up to date treatment strategies for cancer care.
are you a trauma informed naturopath?
Yes, I have done trauma training for health professionals and have experience supporting people with PTSD, cPTSD and childhood trauma. I refer to trauma informed medical and allied health professionals so you are part of a safe, patient centered health care team.
I have attended workshops with Bessel van der Kolk who wrote “The body keeps the score” and deeply acknowledge than when the body doesn’t feel safe and supported in this world, that it will manifest it’s pain in physical or mental distress. I aim to create a safe space for you to feel heard and have safety in your body again.
